Tetracyline and its derivatives. Tetracyclines were discovered in the 1940s and it is a group of antibiotics produced by bacteria of the genus Streptomyces. They are effective against wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, interfering with protein synthesis in these microorganisms. Tetracycline refers to a number of antibiotics of either natural, or semi-synthetic origin, derived from a system of four linearly annelated six-membered rings with characteristic arrangement of double bonds.
