Selected issues on the bioavailability of some important constituents of essential oils. Essential oils are complex mixtures of various chemical compounds including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and phenylopropane derivatives. Usually, one or two constituents dominate in this mixture and are responsible for its characteristic aroma and therapeutic properties. This paper provides a short characteristics of essential oils chemistry and an overview of pharmacological and pharmacokinetic studies that describe the bioavailability of essential oil constituents following different administration route: e.g. topical, inhalatory and oral.
