Phosphonomethoxyalkyl analogs of nucleotides - contemporary antiviral drugs. The paper presents a short summary of synthetic methods, goals and recent results of intensive research in the field of acyclic nucleoside phosphonates (ANP). Three compounds of the ANP group: adefovir, cidofovir and tenofovir are active compounds of potent drugs approved for the clinical use. These compounds show diversed biological activity and were found effective against hepatitis B, AIDS and various diseases caused by DNA viruses.
