Grinding methods of crude drugs. For isolation of a pure compounds or for manufacture of a simple preparation the first operation that must be performed is grinding of the plant material to a powder of suitable particle size. Several types of machines are available for grinding crude drugs. The first operation consists of reducing the size of the plant parts so that they should be fed into the mortars and cutters. Very fine powders can be obtained by grinding in a hammers, colloid, disk, roller, ball-and-race type mills as well as cryogenic grinding. Following grinding, the material must be sified to ensure the proper particle size by different principles.
