Pycnogenol - a dry extract of the bark of French maritime pine in treatment and prophylaxis of cardiovascular diseases. Pycnogenol is a dry extract of the bark of French maritime pine containing a stable concentrate of water soluble bioflavonoids such as catechin, taxifolin, phenolic fruids acids and large number of procyanidins, in different chain length and structure. Pycnogenol has been reported to have cardiovascular benefits, such as a vasorelaxant activity, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibiting activity, ability to enhance the microcirculation by increasing capillary permeability, and the ability to inhibit platelet agrregation. The benefit properties of mentioned extract are focused on strong free radical-scavenging activity against reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.
