2007-02-01

Cytoprotective drugs in oncology. Oncological patients should be paid a special attention to regarding improvement of efficiency, as well as safety of pharmacological treatment because modern pharmacotherapy of neoplastic diseases, which depends on administration of high doses of cytostatics and other drugs, can become the cause of numerous adverse effects in the organism, whose functions have already been disturbed by neoplastic process itself. Therefore such complex procedure, takes into account: appropriate use of cytostatics, preventing post-drug complications, reducing adverse effects of chemotherapeutics and treatment of co-existing pathological states. During cancer chemotherapy very important is cytoprotection e.g. administration of calcium folinate with methotrexate, mesna with cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide, amifostine with cisplatin. Cytoprotective drugs can be divided into: chemoprotectors - effect selectively on healthy cells and protect them from damaging without diminishing drug efficiency; chemocorrectors - support spontaneous renewal after exposition of healthy tissues to antineoplastic chemotherapy.
