Radionuclides in the treatment of cancer bone-pain. Palliative systemic radionuclide therapy is a useful intervention for patients with bone pain from metastatic cancer. Radioisotopes with beta emission are good candidates for that systemic radiation. Samarium, strontium and lutetium are the most useful radionuclides for that kind of therapy. Although some radionuclides are highly effective, its mechanism of action is unresolved. It can be state that radionuclide therapy of painful bone metastases using especially bone-seeking beta-emitting: 89Strontium chloride and polyphosphonate ligands labeled with 177lutetium are effective systemic, pain-palliative treatments in patients with disseminated bone metastases.
