Adipose tissue - endocrine function in physiology and pathology. Adipose tissue is specialized connective tissue composed of adipocytes. Adipose tissue is found in mammals in two different forms: white adipose tissue i brown adipose tissue. The focus of this review is white adipose tissue (WAT). Its main role is to store energy in the form of triglycerides. WAT also serves as an important highly complex endocrine organ. Proteins (enzymes, hormones, inflammatory cytokines) secreted by adipose tissue include: lipoprotein lipase, aromatase, adiponectin, adipsin, leptin, resistin, angiotensinogen, metallothionein, apelin, visfatin, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), retinol-binding protein, tumor necrosis factor-? (TNF-?), interleukin-6 (IL-6), estradiol. An excess of adipose tissue in human body can lead to medical problems like development of obesity and obesity-associated diseases including diabetes, mellitus type II and arterial hypertension.
