Oxidative stress and diabetes mellitus. Part 3. Actual possibilities of pharmacotheraphy in limitation of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress coexisting with hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 leads to development of various biochemical disturbances, particularly within vessels walls, and in consequence to micro- and macroangiopathy. Complexity of pathological factors engaged in disease progress forces to apply multi-directions therapy, striking not only in increased level of blood glucose, but also restricting oxidative stress intensity. This explains, why supplementation of antioxidants has been suggested to have essential meaning in treatment of diabetes. Nevertheless, it has not been confirmed, that typical antioxidants (vitamin E and C, omega-3 fatty acids) are effective in prevention of vascular complications in diabetes. However great interest arouse pleiotropic effects of some antidiabetic drugs, which beside hypoglycemic actions show additional antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties as well as another medicines applied in treatment of disorders connected with the main disease.
