Some quality aspects of medicinal products and dietary supplements - substandard, illegal and counterfeit products. While at one time counterfeit products were largely restricted to watches, designer apparel, CDs, DVDs and software today counterfeiting is a major problem in such diverse product categories as medicinal products, medical devices and dietary supplements. The majority of worldwide markets for pharmaceuticals are well regulated and efficient but trade in counterfeit pharmaceuticals is a lucrative business. Not surprisingly, criminals and criminal organizations are recognizing the profit that can be made from trading in diverted, counterfeit or stolen pharmaceuticals. In very general terms, counterfeit medicines include products that have no active ingredient, the incorrect active ingredient, are super potent or sub potent, contain dangerous impurities, or are adulterated with undeclared active ingredients and also primary or external packaging. Counterfeit pharmaceuticals represent a serious threat to world public health. On a daily basis, many individuals around the world risk death or serious injury when they unknowingly use and consume counterfeit drugs and products manufactured and supplied outside effective regulatory regimes. The appearance of some counterfeits is so good that some major retailers and pharmacies have unknowingly purchased counterfeits. But while there are new forms of counterfeit goods, there are also new strategies for combating counterfeiting. This article describes how to detect and reduce counterfeiting activity.
