The role of statins in anticancer therapy

Statins (or HMG – CoA reductase inhibitors are class of cholesterol lowering drugs that the inhibit the enzyme HMG – CoA reductase which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol. High cholesterol levels have been associated with cardiovascular disease. Statins have been found to reduce cardiovascular disease and mortality in those who are at high risk. The evidence is strong that statins are effective for treating cardiovascular disease in the early stages of a disease and in those at evaluated risk but without cardiovascular disease. Statins are a widely used class of drug have potential anticancer activity. Several meta – analyses have found a reduced risk of cancer, and some have found no increased risk.
