Lapacho [Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC.) Standl.] – historia stosowania, skład i aktywność biologiczna, stan badań
2016-07-04

W latach 60. i 70.

Lapacho [Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. Ex DC.) Std.] - history of use, composition and biological activity, the state of research

Lapacho (Tabebuiae cortex) was used by natives of South America to increase strength and improve concentration, to treat infectious diseases and inflammation disorders, and as an antidote to poisons. In the ‘60s and ‘70s of the twentieth century Lapacho was the subject of scientific interest as a source of anti-cancer substances i.a. lapachol and β-lapachone. However, numerous studies on chemical composition of the plant and activity of the isolated compounds have not given so far conclusive results regarding its efficacy and safety. Despite the centuries-old traditional use, Tabebuiae cortex does not have its monograph in any formal pharmacopoeia, and thus cannot be subjected to legally regulated quality control procedures required for herbal medicinal products. The bark and its preparations are available on the market only as dietary supplements recommended to support the immune system, enhance detoxication processes, regulate the activity of gastrointestinal track and as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents.
