Sarantavotano – a Cretan panacea

Sarantavótano (Modern Greek σαρανταβóτανο, literally ‘forty herbs’) is a Cretan folk medicine composed by means of 40 local herbs and aromatic plants. It is commonly used for a healing by the Cretans in the dosage form of decoction. All the components of the decoction are enumerated in a poetical recipe, representing the traditional folk song entitled Sarantavótano (Σαρανταβóτανο), written in the West Cretan dialect of Modern Greek. The poem, which contains as many as 26 verses, acquired the successive rhymes, thus the recipe can be easily remembered. The song in question glorifies a miraculous herbal panacea created by means of forty ingredients. In the paper all the herbs and aromatic plants mentioned in the poetical recipe are identified, including the so called Cretan dittany (Origanum dictamnus L.), an endemic species growing only in the island of Crete.
