From the History of Introduction of Antipsychotic Drugs

The aim of this article is to present the importance of the discovery of antypsychotic drugs to the therapy of mental disorders. The use of chlorpromazine in the early fifties of the 20th century was the moment of breakthrough in the history of psychiatry. For the very first time a real medical help became available for people suffering from severe mental disorders, i.a., schizophrenia. This drug (and others, discoved later) enabled them to live a productive, satisfying life. The theme is presented on the broad background of the history of psychiatry, in order to emphasize the meaning of this breakthrough to the medical practice.
