Analysis of anticoagulants utilization patterns in orthopedic patients
2019-06-03

The aim of the study was to analyze the patterns of use of anticoagulants, administrated to patients in the orthopedic ward of the hospital in Krakow in 2012–2018 and the cost of individual medicines from the hospital’s budget perspective. Data for analysis were retrieved from the hospital pharmacy electronic registers. Patients were grouped by sex, age and type of surgery they underwent (i.e. hip endoplasty, knee arthroplasty and others, e.g. knee arthroscopy).
Women aged around 65 years constituted the larges patient subgroup. Prophylaxis with use of low molecular weight heparins was most common. Enoxaparin was administrated to the highest number of patients and dalteparin and nardoparin were less commonly used. Oral drugs were used in less than 1.5% of patients. The average cost of single dose of the most commonly used drug (enoxaparin) is slightly higher than for other heparins, but the average time of in-patient therapy is half as long. Enoxaparin therapy therefore seems the most beneficial from the point of view of the hospital budget.

Keywords: anticoagulant prophylaxis, orthopedic, small molecular weight heparins.
