Phar.D. Jerzy Pertkiewicz and his tale of a soldier ・ Jerzy Pertkiewicz (1920–2018), doctor of pharmacy, soldier of September 1939 and the Home Army [in Polish: Armia Krajowa – AK], retired colonel, scoutmaster and Scout of the Republic of Poland, Cavalier of the Virtuti Militari Silver Cross Military Order, Honorary Citizen of the City of Tarnow and the commune of Ryglice. During the occupation, Jerzy Pertkiewicz, nicknamed „Drzazga” [in English: Splinter], commanded the 3rd fire team of the „Regina II” platoon of the 16th Infantry Regiment in the „Barbara” battalion of the Home Army (AK) (Tarnow region). In the fall of 1944, when he was sent away to be treated for injury, his unit was ambushed. Eighteen guerrillas died on the spot, while the others were sent to the Gross‑Rosen concentration camp. Dr. Pertkiewicz commemorated the tragic fate of his unit in the book titled „Regina II” partisan platoon of the „Barbara” 16th Battalion of the Tarnow Land Home Army.
